Weekly Round-Up #15!

I finished up a few different books that I was reading this week and most of them were SO GOOD! I finished reading Funny Girl by Betsy Bird (finished) and while I liked it I realize that I am not the target audience for this one. I think if you have a young girl in your life this would be perfect for them! I gave it a four out of five stars but I would recommend it more for younger girls as that is what it is geared towards!

I also read The Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee (finished) and LET ME TELL YOU. I have thoughts about this one. I know I’m pretty late to all the hype surrounding this book but the e-book was on sale for $0.99 the other day so I bought it and then it sat on my Kindle for like a month. Idk why I didn’t read it immediately as soon as it was done downloading LIKE I SHOULD HAVE DONE but alas I did not. But once I got around to reading it I read the first half of the book very quickly. I don’t read e-books that fast but this one was an exception to the rule. As soon as the book opened I was hooked. You’ve got great strong characters who all have their flaws (Monty enough for 8 people), a plot that moves along nicely as they travel the country, and a writing style that was super easy to consume. The book is about Monty, Percy, and Felicity. Monty and Percy are going on their Grand Tour of the Continent while also dropping off Felicity at her finishing school. Along the way though they are waylaid by highwaymen who rob them and steal their belongings. This sets the three of them off on a journey that involves pirates, love, a sinking island, and some alchemy. This book to me had it all. It had great historical vibes, really fun traveling, lots of gayness, and so much more! I really, really loved it and I would highly recommend it! I gave it five out of five stars.

I finished up a book that I’ve been trying to finished for about two weeks now that was recommended by my coworker, Patricia. It is called Whale Talk by Chris Crutcher (finished) and it will murder your heart/emotions. This book is about TJ who is in high school. To me he was one of those classic save-the-day guys that want to stand up to the bullies and save the little guys. It’s a little hard to write a cohesive review about this book because so much happens that is important to the plot that I don’t want to give anything away! The main plot of the book revolves about TJ starting a swim team at the school and trying to help his team mates earn a varsity letter jacket. Mostly he’s doing this to prove to the school and the school bully that the letter jackets are a status symbol that let’s the jocks in the school get away with much more than they should. His ragtag swim team – called the Cutter High Mermen – don’t even have a pool to practice in so they have their work cut out for them! This book has a lot in it so if you are bothered by bullying, racism, abelism, or abuse to name the big ones this one may not be for you. Although I would highly recommend this one if you can overlook those things. It is a hard book to read but very worth it! I gave it five out of five stars.

The last book that I read was a graphic novel called Special Exits by Joyce Farmer (finished) and it is all about preparing for your parents to die and helping them through that transition. This was another one that was particularly harder to read for me. I have gone through something similar (although no one died) and it is very hard to take care of someone that you love and have to watch them struggle day in and day out (they are better now though). The artwork was really nicely done and made the book easy to read. While I did like this book the subject matter is a tough one to get through. There are a lot of medical things in here and of course it deals a lot with death and taking care of the elderly. That being said I still give it a five out of five stars. If you are of a certain generation like me, this may be something that you are going to go through soon or may be already going though now. The book did have some nice resources in back which I liked.

That is it for this week! I hope you guys had a nice week and a happy Valentine’s Day! I went to game night after work with my friends and came home to flowers from my fiance! It was a hectic day at work but I had a lot of fun afterwords. Leave a comment or come say hi on Twitter! I would love to hear from you!
