When every new year rolls around the reading challenges appear like gremlins. In the past I have tried to do the Popsugar Reading Challenge but have failed miserably. I’ve also heard of the A to Z reading challenge which sounds interesting to me. I feel like with my giant collection and then all the books at the library I could do that one. Maybe I’ll attempt that one this year. I assume that I have to go in order of the alphabet though, not just read them in whatever order I please. I’ve read Age of Bronze, Beauty and the Beast, Cannery Row, Dumplin’, The Earl and the Fairy, Final Girls, Ghost Stories of Antiquary, and His Favorite so I would already be up to the letter I! I think I will try this one out, it seems like a fun one to do. Anyone have a suggestion for the letter I?
One that I just recently saw is called All About that Trope (the link seems to be broken for this one) which is just pick your favorite book trope and read it as much as possible. I would be reading a lot of romance books. I specifically have been liking the friends to lovers trope lately.
What I really need to do is the Back to the Classics challenge. I’m not ashamed to say that the classics aren’t really my thing so I haven’t read that many of them in my lifetime. I tried to read Oliver Twist when I was a kid and couldn’t get past the language and I haven’t tried again since! I did finally finish Cannery Row by John Steinbeck after reading it for over two months and I gotta say it was not worth it! I loved Of Mice and Men so I thought this one would be just as good; nope. I feel like nothing happened in the book. It just went on and on about these people’s lives with no real conclusion! My coworker and I are going to read some Jane Austen next I think. Maybe Pride and Prejudice?
I think the Book to Movie Challenge would be a fun one to try out with a few of my friends and my mom (she reads as much as I do). There are so many book to movie adaptations that it would keep you busy for QUITE awhile! One of the big book to movie adaptations that I haven’t read (any of) is Lord of the Rings (I KNOW!). So I feel like that would be a great series to start with for that particular challenge.
So what do you all think about reading challenges? I feel like I like the community aspect of it a lot but I don’t really like being told what to read at what time. That being said I do like to try and stretch my reading muscles and read new things. So I like that part of it as well. Let me know what you think by leaving a comment below!
