ARC Review!

Hi everyone! I’m back with a bunch of Advanced Reader Copies! There were a lot of them coming out this week, so this will be a little bit of a longer post than usual. All of these books came out yesterday, September 23rd, so you can check them out now! I hope you enjoy them!

The first book that I read is called Little Visitor & Other Abductions by Adam Szym. This book has three stories in it. The first is called A Cordial Invitation, about a young girl who is looking for her father in the desert after their car breaks down, and he goes for help. The second, called Little Visitor, is about a child who disappears after working on a movie with a weird alien costume. The last, called Frolicker, is about two strangers who groom a young man into doing something violent.

This was an interesting read. I liked two of the stories quite a bit, and one of them was just ok to me. The first story, A Cordial Invitation, was my least favorite, but it was still interesting. It was just a little bit boring and confusing. The second story, Little Visitor, was (I’m assuming) based on an ET-esque movie set. This one was interesting because I’m a true crime fan, and this just sounded like something I would watch as an episode of Forensic Files. The last story, Frolicker, was my favorite. The story was interesting, there were a lot of characters, and it really kept my interest the whole time. I was reading this, constantly going, I have to know what happens next.

The next book that I want to talk about is called Rock is a Lady’s Modesty vol. 1 by Hiroshi Fukuda. This is about a young lady enrolled at a fancy all-girls academy who is trying to change her commoner ways to fit in with high society. In order to do that, she gives up everything that she thinks wouldn’t be considered ladylike, such as playing the guitar, watching anime, and a few other things. But she really loves music and playing the guitar. One day at school, she comes across another classmate who is playing drums in a wing of the school that’s no longer used. They jam out together and decide to form a band!

This first volume really follows the two students getting to know each other and starting to form the band. I enjoyed the setup, but I’m really interested to see where this goes. My predictions are that they’re going to be found out and then blackmailed. I’ll let you guys know if I’m right after a few more volumes come out.

The next book is an age gap romance manhwa called Marriage of Convenience vol. 1 by Ken. I say age gap romance for this book, but it’s because the main character, Bianca de Arno, lives her whole life – a miserable one – and then wakes up as her 19-year-old self with all of her memories intact. So she is technically much older than her husband. As a 19-year-old, he is also older than her as well but I can’t remember by how much. The age gap didn’t matter much to me anyway, so I wasn’t paying much attention to it.

I really enjoyed this. I thought it was just going to be another manga about a royal couple, and while that was the basic premise, I think that the characters are what really make this volume shine. Bianca comes back and realizes her mistakes and is willing to learn from them. She doesn’t want her story to go the same way that it did before, so she is trying her best to change herself and the outcome of her life. Can she, though? We get to see a few of her changes, but after all of the setup and background, we don’t get to see much. I’m excited to see where the next volume goes because I think we’ll start to really get into seeing the changes that she’s going to make.

The next book is called My Beloved Supper by Kaho Ozaki. This is a one-shot manga, so only one volume. It would be a great read if you’re looking for something a little bit spooky to read during October. In this, we follow our main character, Yoru, who is a vampire who is obsessed with human food. He loves it. The only issue is that he can’t eat it. Like in a lot of vampire myths, vampires cannot digest human food. So while he can eat it, it’s not going to stay down. Which is kind of a bummer if you want to eat something. However, Yoru can eat human food if he drinks blood first. So he spends his nights feasting on bad guys so that he can go home to his boarding house and eat the fantastic cooking from his landlady.

I liked this, although it was a pretty basic vampire story. There wasn’t anything that was super special about it. The artwork was nice, and the pacing of the story was good as well. If you’re looking for a simple vampire manga, I would suggest checking this one out!

The last book that I want to talk about is What Do You Call This Trash? by tetsukazu. This book was WILD. It starts out with a girl, Akira, who’s been broken up with who is stalking her ex-boyfriend with the help of his younger brother!!! The younger brother, Yuuto, is in love with her, and she’s willing to do anything to stay near her ex. So Yuuto and Akira start hanging out in Yuuto’s room at night just to that Akira can listen to her ex through the wall.

I really didn’t think I was going to like this based on the beginning, but the more I got into the story and got to know all the characters, the more I liked it. Once you get the backstory on Akira, the story and actions make a lot more sense. I also really loved how this ended. No spoilers here, but I did like that we got to see where everyone ends up. If you’re looking for a slightly messed-up book, I would check this one out!

That is it for this post! I hope you guys check out some of these manga and let me know what you think! I would love to hear from you. Have a great rest of your week!
