Arc reviews!

Hello everyone! I’ve got some more Advanced Reader Copies that I’ve read over the past week that I’d like to talk to you guys about. Classes have gotten a little bit busier now that the first week has passed, but hopefully I can get back to writing a few posts a week. Now onto the books!

The first one is called Spectators by Brian K. Vaughan. This isn’t releasing until September 23rd, so you’ll have to wait a bit until it comes out.

In this book, we follow two ghosts who become friends while they are searching for something to watch as the world (seemingly) ends.

I have read almost everything that Brian K. Vaughan has written. Saga, Pride of Baghdad, Runaways, Paper Girls, and more. I’ve loved most of his work, especially Saga and Paper Girls, and this is another book to add to my list of favorites. This has graphic content, sexual and violent, but the message that time is fleeting and society is obsessed with sex and violence will hit you over the head. And with how society is going, maybe that’s not a bad thing. It didn’t really bother me much (probably because I’ve been exposed to so much sex and violence throughout my life). But if that’s something that you’re sensitive to, then I would maybe skip this one.

The next book I want to talk about is called Millie of the Manor by Karina Evans. This was released on September 2nd, so you can check it out now! In this book, we follow Amy, who struggles to speak up in class and is having a hard time making friends. She has social anxiety. She gets invited to a costume murder mystery party that is being thrown by one of her classmates. She doesn’t want to go, but decides that if she can be someone else, the scientist Millie, then she doesn’t have to be herself.

I loved this! It was so well written, and the artwork was adorable. I liked that Amy’s parents don’t seem to understand 100% but they are trying their best to be there for her. Her dad is more pushy, and her mom is more supportive in the background. Together, they seem to be really trying to help her in their own ways. The part of the story where Amy is actually at the party was my favorite part. I loved seeing her be able to use the things that her therapist has taught her. Overall, this was a great book, and I think a very real depiction of social anxiety.

The last graphic novel that I read and want to talk about is called Death of a Popstar, vol. 1, by Violet Karim. This also released on September 2nd! This is a graphic novel that follows a new idol named Sophie Lim. I’m going to include a part of the Goodreads description because I thought it was cute, “Number one on the pop charts and in the hearts of fans worldwide, Sophie Lim is at the top of her game—until she takes a tumble from the top of the stairs.”.

This was a really fun first volume. The story was a little bit predictable in some parts, but I find that a lot of the Webtoon Unscrolled books are like that. I did enjoy the artwork; it was very colorful and had nice, clean lines. The characters were interesting, and I can see that the author is most likely setting up for a love triangle. I like that trope though, so I’m excited to see where it goes. I’ll definitely be checking out the next volume to see where the story goes!

That’s it for this post! I hope you guys enjoyed and I’ll see you in the next one!
