Hello everyone! I’m back with another ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) review for you guys. Some of these are out already, but this first one isn’t out until September, so you’ll have a little bit of a wait, but it’s worth it! Let’s get into it!

Cannon by Lee Lai is a graphic novel that releases on September 9th. Thanks to the cool people at Edelweiss, I got to read a copy early. This book is about Cannon, who is going through a lot. She’s taking care of her aging grandfather, working in the kitchen at a restaurant with a sleezy boss, dealing with friendship issues, and trying to handle it all while keeping her cool. Everything eventually comes to a head, and her life gets upended. I don’t want to give any spoilers about how that happens or what happens afterwards, because that is really the meat of the story.
This is one of the best books I’ve read so far this year. If you’ve ever felt like you are juggling too many things with little to no help, then this is the book for you. I really related to how Cannon felt being her grandfather’s caretaker and getting no help from other family members. Having been through something similar, it was painfully relatable.

Up next, we have a book that came out this week, so you can go read it now! It’s called You’re All Just Jealous of My Jetpack by Tom Gauld. This was released on August 5th, so just a few days ago. It was a quick read because it was only 160 pages, and each page is a single comic. This is the third book of Mr. Gauld’s that I’ve read, and I’m really loving them. The cartoons are easy to understand, so I don’t feel dumb, but they are still more complicated than, say, Garfield. So I do feel a tiny bit superior when I’m reading them. Overall, this is one of my favorites from this author. (I have read another book from this author, but it’s not coming out until October, so you’ll have to wait to get my opinion on that one.) The comics in this are fantastic, and I just loved them. There are a few of them that if they sold prints of it, I would 100% be putting up in my house. If you’re looking for a fun read, I would highly suggest checking this out.

The last book that I want to talk about is called Ghost Circus by Adrienne Kress. (Also out on August 5th!) In this book, we follow Casey, who shows up at the Ghost Circus with no idea how he got there. He doesn’t think he’s dead, so why is he surrounded by ghosts? He quickly meets a ghost by the name of Creepy Girl, and together with the help of the cutest ghost ever, Polterghost, they decide to figure out what’s going on. They do eventually figure out what’s happening with Casey, but that just brings up more questions. Why are there so many ghosts at the circus? Why haven’t they moved on? They’ve got a new mystery to solve, or else Casey will be staying at the Ghost Circus – forever.
I really liked this graphic novel! The artwork was amazing. It was beautiful, and it was so crisp and clean. The characters were also pretty well-rounded. When I first read this, I didn’t like Casey very much. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized that I don’t think I would be very nice or friendly if I suddenly arrived at a ghost circus with no idea what was going on. I think he is very much a product of what’s going on around him, and that’s why he was sometimes a little rude to Creepy Girl. But overall, I think this is a great graphic novel and one that will be great to read during Halloween time!

That’s it for this post! I hope you guys are enjoying everything that you’re reading. Summer is almost over for me, and I’ll be back to taking classes in about a week. I’ve got three this semester, so who knows how much time I’ll have to read. Fingers crossed that these classes aren’t too hard. Macroeconomics is easy, right?
