Weekly Round Up! #33

Totals

This week was a pretty busy one but I did read a bunch of new manga that we got into the library! I hope that you all had a great week! If you have any book recommendation please share them in the comments, I would love to hear from you all! Now onto the books!

Our Dining Table

The first book that I really enjoyed was a one shot manga called Our Dining Table by Ori Mita. This book you guys. It is the cutest BL manga that I have read in quite awhile. It kind of reminded me of My Brother’s Husband but less sad. This book is about Yutaka, who has had trouble eating around other people since his childhood. One day as he is eating his lunch in the park he is approached by a little boy who he ends up sharing his food with. The little boy’s brother comes barreling out of the grocery store and scoops up the little boy all while apologizing to Yutaka for the intrusion. A few days after all this Yutaka is approached by the little boy and his brother, who he finds out are named Tane and Minoru, and asked if he can teach them how to cook. Yutaka agrees and a very special friendship is formed which slowly turns into something more. Over many meals and a lot of bonding, Yutaka slowly becomes a part of Tane and Minoru’s lives.

I absolutely adored this book. If you are a fan of cute cooking books such as Sweetness and Lighting then this one will be right up your alley. I would highly recommend this book. It was very sweet and light. Not a lot of angst but there is a little bit of family sadness in the form of step siblings bullying the MC, so just keep that in mind if that is something that you’re sensitive too.

Our Wonderful Days, Vol. 1

Next up I read an adorable yuri manga called Our Wonderful Days, volume 1 by Kei Hamuro. This manga is about two childhood friends, Koharu and Mafuyu. Mafuyu moved away to Tokyo and the two friends lost touch. But the friends reconnect after Mafuyu starts at the same high school as Koharu. They reconnect and start to spend time together inside and outside of school. As they explore their hometown (which is out in the boonies) Koharu starts to have feelings for her childhood friend.

This is a super cute yuri manga in the same vein as Bloom Into You or A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow (both or which I’ve read and both of which are super adorable as well!). If you are looking for a new sweet, slow burn yuri manga then this one is definitely for you!

My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Vol. 1

Next up we have a twist on the reincarnation manga genre with My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! Vol. 1 by Satoru Yamaguchi. This manga is a combination of a reincarnation manga, a transportation manga, and an otome dating sim manga. The main character gets hit by a car and wakes up in the dating game that she was playing before she died, Fortune Lover. She awakens as an eight year old girl (although she was a seventeen year old high school student when she died) as the main villain of the story, Catarina Claes. Once she figures out that she is the villain and that all of her endings are either death or exile, she starts to try and prepare for her future in the game.

This is a really solid first volume of this manga. It has a lot of information in it but it doesn’t seem overwhelming at all. The author introduces all of the characters very well with bios and descriptions of each of them from the game and from Catarina’s point of view. Even though there is quite a large cast of characters, I was never confused by who was who throughout the book. The artwork was also good and all of the characters were very distinctive so that was a big plus too. If you are a fan of manga such as That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime or Accomplishments of The Duke’s Daughter then you will love this one too!

Go With the Flow

Next up is a graphic novel all about periods called Go With the Flow by Lily Williams and Karen Schneemann! I know, not a subject that a lot of people like to talk about but that’s kind of the point of this book. This is about a group of friends who are fed up with their school not stocking the machines in the girl’s bathrooms with pads and tampons. And the fact that even if they were stocked, that they would have to pay for them. This book dives into a lot of issues surrounding women’s bodies and periods and all the stigma that includes. The administrators of the school are resistant to help the girls at all so they take matters into their own hands and organize protests and write letters to school officials.

This was a really cute book with great art and a really great message. There are resources in the back of the book for young girls as well. I really like the way that the book tackles the subject matter and doesn’t sugar coat anything. It also deals with endometriosis and PCOS. One of the characters has something like that but you never find out what. Which is pretty damn realistic. Most times it takes years to get a diagnosis for either one of those so I appreciated how the book dealt with that as well. If you get a period (or don’t – this is really for anyone that identifies as a woman) then this book will be great for you. I highly recommend it!

Monster and the Beast vol. 1

The last two books that I read this week were volumes 1 and 2 of Monster and the Beast by Renji. This series is about Liam, who is a monstrous human, and Cavo, an ugly but kind and gentle monster. They meet when Cavo “saves” Liam from some men that he is traveling with. What Cavo fails to understand is that Liam and these men were having some consensual fun but he didn’t realize it for that and barged in, killing the men that he thought were attacking Liam. The men that Liam was traveling with were his guides however and that leaves him in a little bit of a tight spot. Cavo offers to guide him to the nearest village and they set off through the woods. Along the way, Liam teases Cavo who is just an innocent little (actually very large) monster who knows nothing of the world except what is in his woods. Will they end up being friends or something ~more~?? Read the manga to find out! I’m not spoiling a thing for you all 😀 This was a super cute manga that I really enjoyed. I love the dynamic of the human being an absolute shit head and the big monster being all soft and shy. Loved the fact that the normal dynamic is just 100% flipped on it’s head. It was great.

That is it for this week! Did you read anything good?? I would love to hear from you down in the comments! I’m always looking for some great suggestions. All the better if they are manga or graphic novel suggestions but I also really love some good YA and comic books (also I’ll read anything if it’s any kind of gay). Come say hi on Twitter or Insta too!

  1. Work is still sucking up a huge amount of my time. They still have not hired anyone yet.
However, a friend of mine helped me to prepare the first part of my romantic comedy/epic emotional journey….
…so I finally saw my book up on Amazon on Friday night! So I am recommending that to everyone I know. I am hoping they will forgive my enthusiasm. A first book is an exciting event!
