Monthly Recap: August

As of a few days ago, the month of August is officially over! For this month I read a total of 89 books. Most of those were manga or comic books with a few graphic novels thrown in there as well. This post would be way too long if I reviewed every single book that I read this month so instead, I’m going to be posting my Best and Worst books of the month! (These are all my opinions and I am not getting paid by anyone to write nice or bad things about these books)

First, we will be discussing the Best category! I read a lot of really amazing books this month but there were a few that really stood out to me. These are books that I can’t shut up about or that I immediately want to call my mom and talk to her about them.

  • Firstly we have My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame. I wrote about this book earlier this month so you all know how much I loved this book. This was a sweet, sad, and all around wonderful book. I definitely cried reading it. Ten out of ten would recommend.
  • Next up is going to be The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang. I also wrote about this book already but now that I have had some more time to think about it I have some more thoughts. This book is about a very personal issue and I think that the author handled it very well. The book explored a lot of heavy things in a bright and colorful way. I think this would make a great book to have in a classroom, it may help some kids understand what is going on in their minds if they see it put down in words and beautiful pictures. Ten out of ten would recommend.
  • Lastly, we have The Gods Lie by Kaori Ozaki. Do you want to cry? Read this. I didn’t include this book in any of my weekly rounds up because I just wanted to keep it to myself for a little while. This was a really hard book to read even though it is really short. It has minimal dialogue and I think that is what makes it so special. It left the reader to fill in the gaps as the story went along. This book is about a young boy in 6th grade who becomes friends with a young girl and her little sister over the course of a summer. I’m not going to tell you what happens. But this story made me feel so much for the characters in such a small time period, that is why it’s being included in the Best category.

Next, we have the dreaded Worst category for the month! I want to stress that these are not bad books, they are just books that I did not enjoy for one reason or another.

  • Mermaid Boys, Volume 1 by Sarachiyomi is the first book in this category. The reason that I did not like this book was the same reason I don’t like the Little Mermaid. The main character in the book is only driven by the fact that he saw a pretty girl and he wants to meet her. He leaves his whole family, life, and kingdom behind just to get a chance to meet this girl who he doesn’t even know if he will like or not! It just seems dumb to me that he would essentially throw his whole life away to take a chance on a girl. What if she doesn’t like him?! What if she likes girls?! What if she never wants to date and wants to live alone with 10 cats?! It makes no sense!
  • My First Love Monster, Volume 1 by Akira Hiyoshimaru is the next book on the Worst list. There is one giant glaring issue why this book is on the Worst list. The main character who is fifteen is DATING A FIFTH GRADER. And when she finds out she does not immediately break up with him because that is really really weird but instead is like let’s just see where this goes! This is SO CREEPY. I could barely finish it and you better believe that I will not be continuing the series.

That’s going to be all for the Worst category! I didn’t have that many books this month that I really did not enjoy.

I hope you guys have enjoyed this monthly round up! I will be trying to do these every month with a Best and Worst list included. Have a great week and I will talk to you guys at the end of the week!
